You're right that a cone would eliminate passing prior to the
start/finish line, but I prefer that the drivers know when the green is
coming and be ready for it. After all, the race starts when the green
flag drops, not when they cross the start/finish line. It's when the
flag person gets cute and tries to trick the drivers that problems arise
and accidents happen.

Yes, and if you're ever worried about purchasing a new smoke holder, just
touch your finger to that little black smoke box right after you let the
smoke out. when you get to the electronics store you can check your
fingertip for a quick reference of the part #.

The flagger at the grands was very consistent and the driver's all seemed to
really like how he flagged. I heard nothing but praise for his flagging. I
didn't see any wrecks or problems with the way he flagged and the driver's
maintained their positions very well, even though they knew there was 1 to
go.

was also used at the 98 grand's in Co. works great ! the problem is when
half the field thinks there going green and the other half doesn't ,
that is when the crashes occur . how many bad starts did you see at the
grands this year east west dirt ????? if the flaggers would figure out
that we are there to watch the kids race and not them flag things would
be much smoother . The biggest problems are when the flag (person )
tries to trick the leader by throwing a quick green . every driver i
work with is told to assume the green is coming out, especially if the
flagger is up in the stand . personally i think we should clone rick
eades and have him at every track in the country . he is the best
flagger i have seen in 1/4 midgets or any other form of racing . and he
uses the one to go signal .

I enjoy watching Rick as much as watching the kids.......
Its like watching a great concert conductor keeping the drum section in
time...... If the kids watch the flagman (Rick), they know to be ready.
The faster starts with "one-to-go" seems to eliminate a lot of position
jumping... the slower the start, it seems the greater the position jumps
by the more savy drivers and wreck potentials increase at turn one..
But without a one-to-go , I like the idea of a line if the cone is a
no-no
Oppps here we go again...............

I'm not the person that started this "starting cone" discussion. I did join
in and since I have been in the flagstand for 3 1/2 years, I should be
allowed to state my position on the subject. I agree that Rick is a great
flagman. I have relieved him many times in the flagstand as he has me. A
perfect start in quarter midget racing is hard to get. I always gave the
green in the center of turns 3 and 4. We have a different problem in Atlanta
as the track is banked 12 degrees and the outside car will swing high and
come flying off the hill and pass everyone before the start/finish line. The
one to go tells the drivers to get on it on the back -stretch and we are
going green unless they are scattered to kingdom come. I have never liked
wide-open starts unless they are in a perfect formation and those are few and
far between. I know that the green flag starts the race and the checkered is
the end no matter when they are thrown. Don't you think it is worth a try to
hold the green to the start/finish line and send jumpers to the rear? Nobody
wants to try that because they say their driver will be lost when he goes out
of town. I am not going to get into one of those #%*&% contest that so many
members like to get into on this net. Our RD3 elect takes care of that for
all of us.

I agree these kids are not dumb the more communication the flagman has
with the drivers the smoother things are going to run. When I would flag
I made it clear at the drivers meeting how the starts, restarts would be
and let them know I would not tolerate jumps or any horse play on the
starts. very seldom did I have to point the rolled black flag as a
warning.I also talked to the novice drivers and explained the best way
to start and to keep a eye on the flagperson. I loved flagging more than
anything, the look on some of the kids faces after there first win or
completing there first race is somthing that stays with you a long
time.Jerry
