MOPAR MEGA WEEKEND MEGA AWESOME!
The USAC Mopar .25 Midget “MOPAR MEGA WEEKEND” was an awesome series of events at Kalamazoo. Most stories start out something like…. ‘it all began on Friday night, but that isn’t necessarily true. The Kalamazoo story began over a year ago when the Hocevar Family wanted to build a premier facility where they could host a large USAC event. Even though this is the 2nd USAC National event, so much more has been added to the Little Kalamazoo complex and their visions are realized more and more!
Early planning takes place before every “Gen Next” race event and all week was devoted to putting the wheels in motion. You know it’s time when darkness falls and the lights are turned on at Little Kalamazoo Speedway.
Trailers had arrived all week leading up to the event, but Friday morning is really the biggest rush. Sign-ins began around 2 and practice ran from 5 – 8 pm. By 6 pm everyone was asking about car count. Just over 225 was the answer and that number became 227 by 7 pm. “We are very happy with that number,” said Kyle McCain, .25 Director. “It’s getting later in the season and we’ve done a lot of big races. School starts this week for many of the kids, and we’re glad they made the trip to Kalamazoo.”
This National event was held in conjunction with the Mid-West Thunder Series splitting the race program to 2 days. All 5 Honda Classes ran practice, heats, lower mains and A-Mains on Saturday in addition to Victory Lane Awards. Drivers Isaak Solochek, Carson Hocevar and Wil Raber were on the Boomer and the Bear Radio Show 92.5 in the morning to promote FREE Admission as well as invite listeners out for MOPAR MEGA Weekend at both Kalamazoo Tracks. WWMT Channel 3, the local CBS affliate interviewed Berklee Jimenez and Harrison Burton as well as shooting some great footage of the competitive racing at Little K-zoo. Some time constraints were in place so that the younger drivers could see some of their friends and former quarter-midget drivers compete on the big track. Fans in MOPAR MEGA WEEKEND blue shirts filled the front stretch for the pre-race autograph session. Kyle O’Gara of Indiana scored his second consecutive USAC/Stars D1 Midget victory. Jimmy Anderson was 2nd, Derek Bischak 3rd, Patrick Wilda Jr and Bryan Nuckles 5th. O’Gara, Bischak and Nuckles are Quarter-Midget Alumni. The Ignite Fuels Midgets ran a double-header for the fans, seeing all top 5 drivers from both features with connections to quarter-midgets. Ryan Krachun took top honors, with Sam McGhee, Cooper Clouse, Chris Lamb and Gage Walker rounding out the top 5. The second feature saw Ross Rankine at the top followed by McGhee, Cooper Clouse, Lamb and Walker as the top 5.
Sunday was Briggs/Deco Day and fans weren’t disappointed. “There is so much competition here,” said Track President Amy Hocevar. “We’ve got a great car count and it’s good to see so many families come after we’ve gone to their tracks. We built this club so we could have competitive racing on these high banks and we are very pleased!” Sunday took a bit longer than most with 8 classes competing.
Both drivers and parents welcomed the MOPAR MEGA WEEKEND Awards – MOPAR Backpacks and Lunch Bags, provided by the Kalamazoo Club. As Michelle Allison helped in Mopar Victory Lane, she said, “I think these are great awards.” “My kids always talk about their racing at school and the MOPAR backpacks and lunch pails certainly are a testament to the sponsorship that MOPAR has given our kids,” said Dale Gross.
The top 3 drivers in each class were also presented USAC Medals; Gold for 1st place, Silver for 2nd and Bronze for 3rd. Hoosier neckbands are also part of the podium finish ceremony.
Families hastily loaded trailers to head for home. Everyone is safe and sound and getting ready for Labor Day weekend at Toledo, including Aaron the flagmen and the Stickle Family.
Next up...................................
“The Labor Day Spectacular – USAC “Generation Next” Round 14 / Mid West Thunder is heating up to be a great event,” said President Dean Dickerson. “The weekend before, we will be having a 2 day club race for those that want to test and tune for the big holiday. We are located at 2901 Key Street, in Maumee, OH 43537. “ If you have any questions, please feel free to call – (419) 351-0088.
Families are asked to bring a way of disposing rubber shavings to the North West Ohio track over the holiday. “Our track sits on the Lucas Co Property,” said Dickerson. “Our landlord is asking that we not litter the complex with the rubber shavings from the tires.”
