USAC MOPAR .25 Midget "Generation Next"
Round 9 - Hagerstown
Dirt Triple Crown Race #2
The USAC Mopar .25 Midget Hagerstown Mason-Dixon Shootout is now in the books.
“Sometimes people get frustrated when they come to a dirt track.,” said Andy Lee. “We don’t get started real early and it takes a while to get the track prepared. The weather has to be right and the timing has to be right and we can get the racers the best track ever.”
Local club members were all smiles on Sunday morning as the rest of the lower mains started the day off. “When you could hear those tires squealing, you know you got it right,” continued Lee. “We knew every driver had a chance to compete.”
There were just 3 short delays during racing Sunday, to blow off the marbles on the top of the track. There wasn’t any water used after racing began. Club members say it speeds up the show to blow off the top of the track at a dirt race. That enables a lot of passing and 90% of the time the cars on the outside won’t spin with the with the top groove being smooth.
Hagerstown rubbered up and the racing was very competitive for Round #9 at Hagerstown, which hosted 168 cars for the weekend. USAC personnel did all the pushing enabling handlers to concentrate on their drivers.
Heat races were run on Saturday but the program was cut short due to the World of Outlaws Modified Show at the big track. The hit of the day was watching the .25 drivers lined up on the fence watching the WoO Haulers invade Hagerstown Speedway. Parents and family members were given $10 off tickets for the WoO show and USAC drivers were given arm bands for FREE admission. There were 18 races run on Sunday before awards were presented to drivers in Mopar Victory Lane.
Jon Piper thanked the USAC crew for coming out and running the event.
A big “shout out” to Ed Pensyl, of Pensyl Enterprises for sponsoring awards for the Lt 160 Honda and Briggs Lt World Formula Classes.
Winners celebrating in Mopar Victory Lane were; Brittany Erlsten taking 3 wins – Hvy Honda, Hvy 160, & Hvy World Formula. Celebrating her championships she said, “I only run dirt and I love Hagerstown!” Connor Gross from the Little T Club in Connecticut has only run dirt once and that was at rain shortened Terre Haute, in April for Round 5, but that didn’t seem to stop him this weekend. He picked up 2 wins (Jr Honda & Jr Animal), as did Dirt Racer Aaron Bollinger who took the wins in Sr Honda and Sr Animal.
Other drivers taking home USAC ‘Gen Next” wins this weekend were – Brian Zyck – Hvy ‘AA, Calvin Carroll - Mod, Briggs Danner – Briggs Lt World Formula and Nathan Brinker – Lt 160. Both Red and Blue Rookie drivers and their teams finished their exhibition races and gathered together for their Round #9 Class Photo. Taking the checkered was Shelby Nick in Red Rookie and Scott Lee in Blue Rookie.
Next up for the “Generation Next” Series is the “Yankee Doodle New England Championship” this weekend, June 22 – 24, at Thompson Speedway’s Little T track.
