USAC .25 District Race in Las Vegas, Nevada

(Las Vegas)  The kids were all smiles as they listened to James Spink giving them a radio check with their new Raceceiver radios.  It was the first time most of these drivers had ever used the USAC equipment which assists them with line-ups and race control messages.  The District Race event was the first USAC appearance for the USAC .25 series.    Winners of events were Taylor Lynch - Jr Rookie, Caden Carlin - Jr Honda, Austin Ahumada - Sr Honda, Dalton Parsons - World Formula, Dean Thompson - Jr Stock, Dalton Parsons, - 'B, Skylar Dale - Sr Stock, Dalton Parsons - Hvy 160, Skylar Dale - Lt 160, Dalton Parsons - Half.
"I really liked all the people at the race," said Dalton Parsons whose family towed from Topeka, Kansas.  "We have run the radios before to practice, but no judging and the people explaining everything was really nice."
These driver's join other kids (Tampa District Event and Toledo District Event) in qualifying for the USAC .25 Midget National event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, July 8 - 11, 2009.

There were 2 lines - one for the shorter kids and one for the taller ones. One by one kids were strapped in quarter midget race cars to take a "drive". Last count of drivers that took the experience was at 94. Not only did new kids get to drive, they also participated in an Easter Egg Hunt. The PRI Show had at least 6 Quarter Midgets on display including the one displayed by Coast 2 Coast Racing News in the Briggs and Stratton Booth. We distributed all the QMA brochures we had requested from the National Office. Special thanks to Dean Moslow and Robbie Gentry for loaning us their newly designed GT American Race Car that held our racing video. Also to Dirks Motorworks for installing our new "BLUE" Hansen Gearbox on the World Formula Engine. Also to Advanced Racing Suspensions for supply us with their new QuarterMidget designed shocks. Watch for their new catalog in the next issue of Coast 2 Coast Racing News.
Also displayed was the new Robbie Stanley Quarter Midget, located in the Zero Error booth. USAC also showcased their new .25 program with a Quarter Midget displayed in their booth. Simpson Race Products introduced a new, improved "Kids-Sized" suit. Impact Racing has introduced a new kid sized seat belt assembly for just under $80.
Briggs Racing introduced their new "Local Option" Engine for 2009. This engine is a scaled down Animal Power Plant putting out 9 hp with a Rev Limiter set at 6200 RPM. It is a BOX STOCK Engine, that is sealed at the plant costing just $535.00. Another product released this weekend was the new 35 Chain & Sprocket Set for your Honda powered Quarter Midgets by Double D's Motorsports in conjunction with Banditos Motorsports. This new chain and sprocket set will reduce rotating weight by almost 2 pounds as well as get you approximately 1 more horsepower and 2 foot pounds of torque.

What a busy weekend in Orlando, Florida. We are at the PRI Show.
There are Quarter Midgets on display in the show that brings over 40,000 racing enthusiasts under one roof. There is a wealth of information, tons of new trick products, and a Quarter Midget Reunion second to none.
K-1 has kids Nomex gloves starting at XXXS sizes. Great for your little guys and gals. Impact Racing has new seat belts. (There appears to be a Rule Change Proposal for the National QMA Meeting to length the time seatbelts can be used in QMA from 2 years to 3 years. This is an SFI Rating and SFI told us.... these seatbelts are made from military material... not the same content as the seatbelts in your regular street car. Once the belts are exposed to the sun (UV Rays) it tampers with the compound of the materials making them less strong. Mittler Brothers is coming out with a new cast iron block... Zero Error has the most amazing display (with a Quarter Midgets) .... Derek Fitzgerald has really outdone himself. Not only does he manufacture the latest and greatest designs and products, he has made the coolest billet YO-YO's that are complete with bearings. Scott Racing also has their acu-slide motor mount for Quarter Midgets.

Alex won several Grand National events over the years. Now at age 15, he won at Turkey Night. The race was also the USAC Ford Focus Nationals event, making Alex the 2008 Ford Focus National Champion. "It's been a really fun year for us. I was so close to winning the California Pavement Series too. I really wanted that," said Bowman.

Tracy Hines, the winner of the Sprint Car race, started his young career as a member of the Big Z QMA Club (now Mini Indy) in his early years. Tracy, now over the age of 30, remembers the days when he ran QuarterMidgets. His family use to drive to Huntsville for Thanksgiving. His dad, actually held a position in Tech, with QMA.

Bobby Santos, of Connecticut is 24 years young. Santos took the Midget Race in grand fashion after catching Davey Hamilton at lap 90 in the 98 lap race. Santos, driving for Western Speed and Fuel, has won at Irwindale 3 times now, but this was his only Turkey Night Midget Championship. Bobby grew up racing at the Little T Club in Thompson, CT.

Looks like most Quarter Midget people know that the Rule Change Proposals are now out, and the people running for QMA Office, as well as those who are running for Regional positions, have been announced. Clubs that have submitted proposals for the 2010 Grand National Events are
1) Orange Show in Southern, California and Portland in Portland, Oregon for the West along with the River City Club in Austin, Texas.
The Capitol Club in Rio Linda, CA (home of the 2007 Dirt Grands) for the 2010 Dirt Grands.
Sadly, not one club has put in a proposal for an Eastern Grands for 2010.

My, My, My.............. should we say Quarter Midget Racing is ON the Map of Success. This website works hard to inform its readers of the success of many alumni drivers. Michael Carber from PA had a good QM career and has now been invited to Australia to represent the US. Jake Swanson from the old Pomona Club in CA has been crowned the winner of the PRA Junior Focus Championship. Alex Bowman of AZ has been named one of the Ford Focus Champs. Both Nic Faas (CA) and Tracy Hines (IN) will hopefully be sewing up Midget Series Titles. (Hines-National)
(Faas-West) as well as Jerry Coons, Jr of Az grabbed the USAC National Sprint Car Title. Coons also captured the Silver Crown Championship with a great run at Phoenix International on Thursday, making him a Triple Crown Winner. Brady Bacon, Scott Pierovich, Matt Mitchell, Johnny Rodriguez, CJ Sarna, with many other QM Alumni will run on Thursday.
Josh Wise, AJ Almendinger, Mike Bliss, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman and Reed Sorenson, QM Alums, will also run this weekend at PIR.

It was a beautiful "hot" afternoon at the southern California Orange Show Track on Saturday where a great bunch of racers gathered together to remember "Kara Hendrick." Kara started her racing career in Quarter Midgets, went on to make her mark in USAC TQ' & Midget Racing. then tragically lost her life at El Cajon Speedway. The Orange Show Club supports the Hendrick Family as Renee (her mom) along with Danny & Kenny (her brothers) remember. Many alumni and families continue to return for this event. Eric Wise (Josh Wise), Miguel Martinez (Casey & older brother), Ohkui Plummer (A & J Racing), Ray & Janet Dodd, the Albains, the Bozanich's, the Maoli's, the Williams, and many others. Club members supported Renee in the raffle where proceeds continue to go to the "Kara" Scholarshp fund. Lines were long and items filled more than 2 tables. More Orange Show TRACK RECORDS fell as well.
Novice fell to 7.0419 by Christian Villagran
Heavy Honda fell to 5.6354 by Matt Overholtzer
Sr Stock fell to 5.0613 by Keith Zimmerman
Lt Mod fell to 4.9160 by Daniel Williams
Lt 'B fell to 4.7153 by Keith Zimmerman

The Raffle was huge! Renee, the pretty blonde lady on the left had a huge crowd at the raffle to benefit the Kara Schlorship fund.

That is NOT a typo..... Keith Zimmerman took a 'B around the Orange Show track in 4.7153 seconds!

Keith Zimmerman took his NC Chassis powered car with his
"Doug Lindow" 'B Engine to a new track record of 4.7153 seconds!

As another Hurricane hits Texas yet another Hurricane is hitting QMA. And this one hit hard! The Region 4 Board had issued a Code of Conduct against a member. The member then took it to the National Board. The Region decision was reversed.... but that isn't the half of it. The way in which the National Board discredited the Region 4 Board to the very member that had been issued a Code of Conduct was so disheartening.... all but 2 of the Region 4 Board resigned! Dave Michaels, past RD 4, has been in QMA for over 20 years.... and has served the Region for many terms. What is going on in the second LARGEST Region in all of QMA??
The QMA President has appointed Dave Young as RD for 4.
There are just 65 cars at Waterford for "Honda Day" Region 4..... watching it rain!

Again, another "friend" to Quarter Midget Racing has passed. Joey Pratt, aka "Juice" lost his battle with kidney disease Sunday night. Joey was the Advertising Manager for Area Auto Racing News. He was the crew chief in the 90's for the Sammons Race Team where the Western Grands Hvy 'AA - A Main race was decided after a 30 minute discussion. Danny Sammons took the win over Kyle Krisiloff. Because of his love of this sport and 2 small boys, Joey restored a "first" Quarter Midget and presented to Danny Sammons at his retirement banquet. He was both a friend and a collegue to many. He was a mentor to many. He once helped a very young boy choose a ring size at the Wall Grands in '98, just because. He will be remembered by many in the racing worlds! Services will be this Thursday at Boucher Funeral Home, 1757 Delsea Drive, Deptford, NJ 08096 from 6-8:30 p.m. Cards can go to
Cindy Pratt, 19 Wayne Driver, Woolwich, NJ 08085. In lieu of flowers, donations can go to the Gift of Life Transplant Foundation,

The 2008 Dirt Grands are about to begin. Friday morning, parking began about 8:00 am. A line out the gates of Christian County Fairgrounds just off Route 29, began as Quarter Midget Racing Families began to pull in to settle for a week of racing. "It's going to be an exciting week", said Tony Verardi, Region 5 Director. "We closed pre-registration with 274 cars signed in." We have had tremendous help from the town of Taylorville and their many businesses. All total we have received over $15,000 in donations from these businesses," says Doug Schierer. Today, in the Towns Paper, there was a huge cover story about the Quarter Midget Club and Dirt Grands." The Christian County Quarter Midget Club is ready to host the 2008 Dirt Grands!

After a day off on Thursday at the 2008 Western Grands, C and B Mains will continue on Friday. But for now, let's take a break for some really "fun stuff"! Most of you know that for many years my family has worked to bring you infomation and news. Not only do we produce Coast 2 Coast Racing News as a print publication, starting the paper at the Las Vegas WinterNationals in 1994, we created the Daily Paper at the Eastern Grands at Mini Indy, our first one being in 1995 and then back in 2005, we created a LIVE site so those that couldn't get to the Grands could see things unfold. At the end of the last couple of events, I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting the champions up close. I have tried to produce a video so that all of you could meet the kids that I get to see grow up and move through Quarter Midget Racing. Our video's are now becoming a reality. These video's are so fun to watch as the champions gather, some for their very first interview. They laugh and smile, they talk, some are serious, some have been coached and some are very shy. This is about the kids.... The kids at the Grand National events.
Please take a few minutes to watch what I get to see.... (click here) ....
a very special thanks to Joe Coss for helping me get this right with more to come. Debi Supan

Wednesday Update from the 2008 Western Grands - 24 races were run today making the National Board decide to give participants a day off on Thursday. The racing will resume on Friday with A Mains scheduled for Saturday.
One hot little racer is Parker Smith who broke in Qualifying in the Junior Honda Class. He raced 6 times on Wednesday, beginning in the "I" Main. During the last race, his dad was a corner worker and entered the track on a yellow flag. He was clipped by a car that sent him to the local h
ospital for observation. Hopefully he will be back on Friday, when Parker will start mid pack in the C Main for Junior Honda. This photo to the left shows the view everyone had on Wednesday at the Western Grands. Danny Stone throws the checkered on yet another race.

Opening Cer
emonies were also held on Wednesday. RICE RACE CARS were recognized for their 50 years of building Quarter Midgets. Check out their website at RiceCars.com
